Returning to our Roots, Focusing on the Future

Editorial

Following a period away from publication, University Express returns with a renewed editorial direction and a refreshed commitment to raising the standards of its journalism. This year, the paper will return to the fundamentals of student journalism: original reporting, meaningful investigations, accountability and ensuring that the voices of students within University College Cork (UCC) are heard.

Since 1997, University Express has been the official newspaper of University College Cork. Its origins, however, date back to 1972, when the publication first emerged as The Gazette, a Students’ Union publication. In 1997, former Students’ Union Publications Officer Fionnán Sheahan relaunched the paper under the name University Examiner, a change partly informed by the publication’s working relationship with the Irish Examiner at the time. Throughout its history, the publication has undergone several changes in name and identity, having been known at various points as Campus Chronicle, University Xpress and UCC Express, before adopting its present title, University Express, in 2018.

We are committed to returning to the publication’s original purpose as a newspaper, upholding the editorial standards and journalistic integrity that such a role demands. Our aim is to deliver investigative, original reporting to readers. At a time when media is increasingly shaped by infotainment, misinformation and fleeting online content, we believe there remains a compelling case for traditional, considered student journalism. University Express enjoys editorial independence and autonomy — free from University Management, Student Union and Corporate interference — presenting an opportunity to build upon our foundations and shape an ambitious future for the publication.

While University Express will continue to cover developments of national and international significance, it must also recognise the value of reporting from within its own university. There is no shortage of stories, concerns and developments within UCC that warrant greater attention and scrutiny. Central to this direction will be a renewed emphasis on original, in-depth reporting on issues that matter to UCC students. Rather than simply reflecting on or reproducing conversations taking place online, the paper must return its attention to campus itself.

University Express is in an enviable position, as are Irish student-led publications more broadly. Ireland has a comparatively favourable environment for journalists, ranking seventh globally in the 2026 Reporters Without Borders World Press Freedom Index. However, a strong national record on press freedom does not necessarily translate into editorial independence at university level. While the degree of autonomy afforded to student publications may vary between institutions, the challenges facing student journalism are not insignificant — some student journalists around the world face administrative censorship, legal challenges and limitations on access to reliable information.

Within this wider context, University Express occupies a particularly favourable position. The publication enjoys full editorial autonomy, with no obligation of allegiance to either UCC administration or the UCC Students’ Union. It is not simply a communications channel for either institution, but a student publication with the freedom to determine its own editorial direction and the responsibility to report on matters of significance to its readership. Additionally, University Express is not driven by commercial interests or the need to prioritise financial gain and need not compromise its editorial priorities to ensure engagement.

The publication recognises both the privilege and the responsibility that this autonomy entails. That privilege must be matched by a commitment to using the platform constructively: prioritising substantive, original journalism over superficial online discourse and ensuring that issues affecting the student community are given the attention they deserve.

The content produced by University Express has, at times,  strayed from the original ethos of the paper. It is time for University Express to return to its roots and reclaim its place as an award-winning platform for independent, substantive student journalism.

The return of University Express involves considerable work beyond what appears on the page. Following a period of hiatus, the publication is currently undertaking a range of behind-the-scenes work, from reviewing contributor applications and organising recruitment to establishing training and editorial processes for the year ahead. While there remains much to be done, this work is central to ensuring that the publication can operate to the standards it intends to uphold.

We are conscious that rebuilding a publication takes time, but are equally eager to get back to the work of reporting on the issues that matter to UCC students. We welcome contributions, story pitches and expressions of interest from students who wish to become involved. Above all, University Express hopes to re-establish itself as a publication that students can turn to, contribute to and hold to account.
